Wanting Twitter in Adium

I just realized that I'm starting to use direct messages on Twitter more and more to communicate with people. Normally when I'm too lazy to SMS via my phone or more importantly when I don't know their phone number. Anyone know if people have thought about integrating Twitter into Adium as a standalone account type? I'd love to see my Twitter friends show up as buddies with the conversation flowing in my chat client versus sending messages via Twitter.com and reading responses on my phone via SMS.

That'd be a cute hack. I'm checking out the Adium source and downloading XCode 3.0 .... I'll see now easy it is.

Is there not a Twitter bot on the various IM networks?

There is, but it doesn't do what I want. I don't want to IM Twitter, I want to have a conversation with a friend via direct messages using Twitter.

Possibly making their presence be a function of when they last posted and/or when you last interacted with them.

With the same effect as having a direct conversation with someone via blog comments, in that the messages are posted publicly on your twitter?

NB: I have never used Twitter, so I have no idea what their privacy controls look like.

Direct messages are only between the two people, they don't show up publicly nor in either person's timeline.

XMPP FTW
I think LJ users can post via XMPP (talking with Frank?), the same way for Twitter would be neat, for all XMPP clients.

Er, posting blog via XMPP? I think I remembered that wrong.
