Status Update: David is...

warm smile
So yeah, it's true. Next week I'm excited to join Facebook's engineering team as the Senior Open Programs Manager and will continue focusing on open source and open standards. I haven't started yet, so I'll keep it light on the details until I've really started to dig in.

Two years ago when I re-joined Six Apart, I did so out of an interest in evolving social networking technologies along with brad and we – along with many others – have made an amazing amount of progress. This was my second time working at Six Apart and I'm sad to leave; they're a great bunch of people with some awesome stuff coming.

This past year as I've worked closer with teams at Facebook, I've been impressed by their products, smart people, and innovation. I hope to continue building on my past experience in working on making the web more open and useful for everyone along with the great team at Facebook!

Congrats
Right on Dave. Let's hope that having you, Morin, Elman and Shepard on the inside can keep Facebook honest as they continue their upward climb.

As McCrea likes to say, we've seen this movie before — and preventing the AOLization of Facebook is probably the number one thing that openness can prevent (not to mention all the good stuff that openness brings).

I also think that there is a difference between the "openness" that Facebook has promoted this year and the one that we tend to espouse, so narrowing that divide will be a great thing to apply yourself to.

Congrats and good luck, yo.

Re: Congrats
I'm not so sure that AOLization is a bad thing - if you're talking about making technology accessible to a large population :-)

But it will be great to have you leading the charge for openness and solid ID management practices at a time when Facebook has some important choices to make - both on the technical and policy front. And I'm looking forward to continuing to work with you as you make your move to FB.

Congrats again,
-Edwin

Re: Congrats
Heh — right on Edwin. When I say "AOLization", I primarily am referring to the "AOL interweb" vs the rest of the open web. Making technology more accessible is certainly a good thing — but doing so at the expense of individual choice, well, that's something I couldn't support (not that you're suggesting as much — just sayin').

At last!
Dave - you have no idea how excited I am that you're joining. +1 Edwin and Chris - it's still super early in this social web thing and I'm really glad you'll be there to help guide the ship. Can't wait for you to get started.

Congratulations Dave!

This is so exciting! I expect that this means great things for open standards. I look forward to hearing about your plans with Facebook and can't wait until you jump in!

Does this mean Hawaii 5.0 is on?

Much aloha,

Congrats, David!
This should be interesting...I personally think that Facebook needs a the most help right now with exactly the sorts of open standards and nuanced social sharing concepts that you can really help with. So potentially a very big win! I wish you the best.

Great news Dave! The world was a better place for having you at 6A — I can only see it be even better having you at Facebook. A Chris said, having you, Morin, and the rest of the crew on the inside is a big deal to those of us on the outside.

I'm super stoked for you, but selfishly very sad. It will not be the same around here without you.

Nonetheless, go forth and do good stuff.

I don't trust Facebook, but I do trust you...
Congrats David! As much as I can't stand Facebook, I appreciate the fact that they know good people and have the sense to hire them. It gives me hope that one day I might actually be able to enjoy using the site that all of my friends and family are on instead of gritting my teeth at all of the things that drive me insane about it.

Now only if they would hire a top-flight user experience designer, all of my worries and annoyances might be a thing of the past.
